ALICE L. JACKSON
(February 15, 1944 – January 3, 2010)
Alice Lorraine Johnson Jackson was born on February 15, 1944 in East Orange, New Jersey to the proud parents, Arthur and Leomia Johnson. On Sunday, January 3, 2010, after a valiant battle she took her flight to glory with her family by her side.
Known to many, Alice had several nicknames…Rainey, Miss Alice, and Aggy among them. She attended schools in East Orange and Orange, New Jersey.
Alice was married to the later Walter Jackson. Though this marriage ended in divorce, she continued to remain very close to her in-laws, especially her mother-in-law, the late Helen Toliver, who continued to provide her with counsel and support.
Alice had a wonderfully rich and vibrant singing voice, easily able to harmonize to any song. Another amazing gift was her ability to recall the oldest events including date, the time, who was wearing what, the weather, etc. If something or someone needed to be recalled, Alice was always sought after. Her son used to lovingly tease her, called her the Encyclopedia.
Alice greatest gift was her friendship. If she befriended you, you were a friend forever.
Alice was preceded in death by her father. Before he passed, she devoted her time and resources caring for him in the comfort of his home. Alice is survived by her mother, Leomia Johnson of Orange, N.J.; sisters, Bernice Johnson of Rahway, N.J., and Barbara Bridges of Montclair, N.J.; brother, Howard Johnson of Irvington, N.J.; four sons, Walter of Plainfield, N.J., Arthur of Fayetteville, N.C., Lawrence (Katie) of Fayetteville, N.C., and Jonathan of Orange, N.J.; 6 grandsons, James Lamar Matthews, Tyrone Jamaal Jackson, Darrell Freeman, Wesley Stroud, Kyree Hill, and Khalif Hill; nephew, Damion “Tariq” (Bri); nieces, Alexis and Nicole Johnson; great nieces, Danielle Johnson and Mari Gregory. She is also survived by a host of relatives and friends that loved her dearly.
