LEOMIA CORBETT JOHNSON

LEOMIA C. JOHNSON

(October 8, 1917 – December 5, 2011)

Leomia C. Johnson was born on October 8, 1917 to the late Gussie L. Corbitt and Lillie E. Schofield Corbitt in Perry, South Carolina.  She was called home to her heavenly reward on December 5, 2011.

She was raised in North, S.C., with her 13 siblings (11 have predeceased her).  She joined and was baptized at the Oakey Spring Baptist Church at the age of 14 and was active in the church, participating in the Sunday School and the Youth Folks Choirs & the Usher Board.

In her teenage years she met and later married the late Arthur Johnson of Edgefield, S.C., and to this union, four children were born.  During the early years of her marriage, she and her husband traveled around the United States before making New Jersey their home in 1943.

During her children’s school years, she was an active member of the PTA.  As she enjoyed her senior years, she was a member of the Silver Leaf Tenants Association and former President of their Sunshine Club.  She was formerly a member of the Gospel Choir and the Premier Center (in Orange, N.J.)

Although she birthed four children, she was known as Ma, Ma Johnson, and Ms. Diva, Mommy Johnson to many.  Having lived in the Parrow Street Projects, she was known for being a care giver to all and better known for her sweet potato pies and biscuits.

Besides being a wonderful friend, person, daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was a true inspiration in the way she lived her life.  Her strength and her conviction had a powerful influence on all that knew her.  She was a caring and amazing woman.  Leomia believed that the key to staying young and being healthy was to stay active and always be there for others.  It was not unusual to see her tap her feet, wave a finger and nod her head when a thumping groove came on the radio or was played at one of the many senior socials she loved to attend.  One of her favorite scriptures was Psalms 121.

Leomia leaves to cherish her loving memories:  3 daughters, the late Alice Jackson, Bernice Johnson, and Barbara Jean (Stuart) Bridges-Riley; son, Howard Durand; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Asenath Ferguson; brother, Wyman Corbitt; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
