BIOGRAPHY

ASENATH ELIZABETH CORBITT FERGUSON

 

Asenath, also affectionately known by her family as “Sena,” was born on May 31, 1932 in North, South Carolina, Orangeburg County, to the late Gussie Lowman Corbitt and Lillie Elizabeth Schofield Corbitt.   Her brothers and sisters, who have gone on to be with the Lord, are: Willie, Casper, Levi, Karen, Gwendolyn, Leomia, Azalyn, Zenobia, John Henry, Louis, Eugene and Arthur Sylvester.  Wyman Lowman and Asenath, the youngest of 14 children, are the only two left.

 

Asenath met and married the late Reverend Asia Ferguson, Jr., on December 23, 1952 and to this union two wonderful boys were born:  Asia Dewayne Ferguson, III and Benjamin Calvin Ferguson.  After living in Orangeburg County, the family moved to Columbia, SC in 1961.

 

Asenath was educated in the public schools of Orangeburg and Aiken counties.  She enrolled in school at CA Johnson High School, Columbia, SC, as an adult, graduated and received her diploma in May 1974.  She later enrolled in Winthrop College in the Special Education Training program.  She was employed as a Special Education Teacher Assistant at Pendergrass/Fairwold Special School for 21-years and was named the 1998 Classified Employee of the Year at Pendergrass/Fairwold School.  Asenath is currently employed with Richland School District One at John P. Thomas Elementary School as a Volunteer and Foster Grandparent.  She has worked for the school system for 41-years.

 

Asenath is an active member of the Oakey Spring Missionary Baptist Church, located in Salley, SC.  Some of her affiliations are:  Past Secretary of the Oakey Spring Missionary Baptist Church for 18 years as well as president of the Missionary Circle #2. She currently serves as Chaplain for the Sanctuary Choir.  Asenath organized the Deaconess Ministry at Oakey Spring Missionary Baptist Church in September 1975 where she served as President and Vice President and is a current member of the Ministry.  Other religious affiliations include her serving as the past Vice President of the Beaver Creek Women’s Auxiliary and past Secretary of the Beaver Creek Church Union. 

 

Asenath is a founding member and past President of the Baptist Ministers’ Wives and Ministers’ Widows Alliance of Greater Columbia and Vicinity.  She has served on the Interdenominational Ministers’ Wives and Widows Alliance of Columbia as the Financial Secretary from 1991-1994 and was the Treasurer from 1994-1996.  She received the Minister’s Wife of the Year certificate in April 1998. 

Asenath has also served as Vice President of the State of South Carolina Ministers’ Wives and Ministers’ Widows Association from 1996-1999.

She has been a member of the International Association of Ministers’ Wives and Ministers’ Widows for 34 years and has served as Usher for the Convention.  She is a member of the Headquarters Committee located in Richmond, Virginia.

 

For the past 58 years she has been a member of the Nannie Burrough Missionary Circle of St. John Baptist Church in Columbia, SC and has served as the Devotional Leader for the past 18-years.

 

Every chance Asenath gets to share the gospel or uplift people, she will take full advantage of the opportunity.

 

Her favorite Scripture is:  Psalm 34:1 – “I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
