Gwendolyn was born on August 12, 1916 in Columbia South Carolina. She is the fifth of fourteen children born to Gus a Lillie Corbitt. Her brothers and sisters include, Willie, Casper, Levi, Leomia, Azalyn, Zenobia, John Henry, Louis, Arthur Sylvester, Wyman, and Asenath Elizabeth. After being raised on the farm, Gwen migrated to Philadelphia in the late 30’s and made a career as a Seamstress. She brought two sons into the world, Etholyn and Charles Henry.
Gwendolyn made her church home in Gethsemane Baptist Church, in which she was a member of the Young at Heart, the Missionary group, and a faithful member of the noon day Prayer Service.
Gwendolyn loved to cook and was known for entertaining and serving family as well as friends.
In May of 2009, after an injury she spent a short time in the hospital unable to walk temporarily. From there she went to live in the Fairview Nursing Home, where she regained most of her stability and strength and remained there until the Lord called her Home on Monday, February 21, 2011.
She was preceded in death by: one son Etholyn Corbitt: and seven brothers and sisters.
She leaves to mourn and cherish her loving memories:
One son, Charles Henry Thurman; four grandchildren, Gregory Corbitt, Yolonda Corbitt-Jackson, Wanda Pauling, and Tanya Downing; six great-children; two great-great-children; two sisters, Leomia Johnson and Asenath Ferguson; one brother, Wyman Corbitt; and a host of nieces, nephews, church family and friends.
