Lillie E. Schofield Corbitt

LILLIE SCHOFIELD CORBITT

June 16, 1892 - January 1, 1997

“Our Heavenly Father hath again reminded us of brevity and uncertainty of human life, and hath warned us also to be ready for that day which comes at last unto all.  When the body returns to dust, and the spirit unto Him who gave it.”

Lillie E. Schofield, the youngest of seven children born to Isom and Lula Woodward Schofield, Aiken County, Perry, South Carolina on June 16, 1892 entered into Eternal Rest on Wednesday, January 1, 1997 at White Oak Manor of Columbia, South Carolina.

She joined Oakey Spring Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and served faithfully until her health failed.  She could not attend, but she kept Oakey Spring in her heart.  While at Oakey Spring she served in many capacities of her church namely:  Sunday School Teacher – Primary Class; Matron of Usher Board; Mission Treasurer; Jubilee Choir; Deaconess Board; Missionary Circle; and Mother of the Church for many, many years where she was responsible for preparing – THE HOLY BREAD AND WINE – for her church family on Communion Sundays.  She knew, all too well, the duties of a mother are to make sure that her children are fed properly, as she is the mother of 14 children.  She cared for her church family, as she did her birth family, with much love, care, and concern.

Past organization affiliates are:  Vice President, Beaver Creek, Women’s Auxiliary; Treasurer, Beaver Creek Missionary Church Union; Treasurer, Union Progress Society; Nannie Burrough Circle; St. John Baptist Church; and Foster Grandparent; Light of Columbia, Tent No. 19.

She was married to the late Deacon Gus L. Corbitt on January 10, 1910.  To this union fourteen (14) children were born, nine preceded her in death.

The fourteen (14) children born to Lillie were her light and inspiration.  We thank you for her lovely family, namely:  two sons: Mr. Levi Corbitt of North, South Carolina and Mr. Wyman Corbitt of Springfield, South Carolina; three daughters:  Mrs. Gwendolyn Stephens of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Leomia Johnson of Orange, New Jersey and Mrs. Asenath E. Ferguson of Columbia, South Carolina; five daughters-in-law:  Mrs. Rosetta L. Corbitt of Portsmouth, Ohio, Mrs. Ethel M. Corbitt of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Mary E. Corbitt of Columbia, South Carolina, Mrs. Maggie Corbitt of Springfield, South Carolina and Mrs. Josephine Corbitt of East Orange, New Jersey; two sons-in-law:  Reverend Asia Ferguson of Columbia, South Carolina and Mr. Arthur Johnson of East Orange, New Jersey; fifty-five (55) grandchildren; one hundred fifty-seven (157) great-grandchildren; thirty-two (32) great-great grandchildren; six (6) great-great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous other sorrowing relatives and friends.
